Start Your Shopping!

Published by kevinmcguire under Holidays Edit This

As today is Black Friday and stores open up early and thrifty deal searching shoppers line up at midnight, I decided to publish post at 3am!

By the time most of you read this the madness that is associated with Black Friday will likely be over with. Many stores offer their best deals before the sun rises and while every item will not sell out, the great price being offered may expire at 9am or 10 am etc. To some Black Friday is a huge deal, something that gets planned out after Thanksgiving dinner is settling in stomachs. Game plans are formed at the dinner table after a slice of pumpkin pie and family members plan out their strategies.

Some people come equipped with hand-held radios, although cell phones work almost as well. Many people bring the newspaper flyer with them, having already circled exactly what they want from each store. Some families split up and attack multiple stores or locations at the same time.

What is the hot item this year? What did everyone be line up for at Toys R Us or Best Buy? Or do you go out later in the morning or afternoon when the dust settles a little bit? Share your Black Friday experience in the comments section.

Eat Turkey and Watch Football

Published by kevinmcguire under Holidays, Sports Edit This

Today is Thanksgiving so my advice to you is plain and simple; Eat until your belt seems too tight and watch football as much as possible.

The Detroit Lions have a long history of playing on Thanksgiving and this year will be no different when they welcome the Tennessee Titans to their place for Thanksgiving.  If this game were played on paper the Titans would win this one without blinking, but the Lions usually find a way to make these special games worth watching.

After that the Dallas Cowboys will host the Seattle Seahawks.  In the prime time game the Philadelphia Eagles will host the Arizona Cardinals in a game that will absolutely go overboard on “bird” references and jokes between eagles, cardinals and turkey.

There is also college football to whet your appetite with Texas and Texas A&M in a Lonestar state rivalry.  Check your local listings for all game times.

As for the food, stuff yourself silly with turkey, stuffing, carrots, mashed and/or sweet potatoes, casseroles, crescent rolls or whatever else finds a home on the dinner table.

Happy Thanksgiving to all, and to all a good night!

Meet Up With Old Friends

Published by kevinmcguire under Holidays Edit This

Tonight is one of the biggest nights to go out, hit the bar scene, and meet up and catch up with old friends.  On Thanksgiving Eve I suggest you go out to the old hang out and find out what your old friends have been up to.

Some high schools are playing Thanksgiving games tonight, providing old high school class mates a great opportunity to get together.  Head to your old school, root for your team with your friends, and then head out to have a drink or a meal with your buddies.  Find out what they have been up to since you last hung out.  Find out where things are heading.  Exchange e-mail addresses (or  real addresses) and phone numbers.  Don’t let tonight be a one time thing - use tonight as a chance to ensure you keep in touch with your old friends!

Whatever you end up doing folks, be safe out there!

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

snoopy-and-charlie-brown-001.jpg

Tonight at 8pm ABC will be airing A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving , so be sure to put that on your to do list or set your DVR or VCR!

Peppermint Patty invites herself and her friends over to Charlie Brown’s for Thanksgiving, and with Linus, Snoopy, and Woodstock, he attempts to throw together a Thanksgiving dinner.  Poor old wishy-washy Charlie Brown can’t cook though unless it is cold cereal, and he is bound to pour too much milk to make that breakfast soggy! What a blockhead!

After the half hour classic special airs ABC will air This is America Charlie Brown: The Mayflower Voyagers, an educational half hour special  in which the Peanuts cast tells the story of the first settlers in America.

If you miss tonight’s airing ABC will also broadcast the Thanksgiving specials again on Thanksgiving night.

Prepare for Thanksgiving

Published by kevinmcguire under Holidays Edit This

Whether you are hosting a Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday or traveling to someone else’s home, you will probably be bringing something to eat. Are you responsible for the turkey or a side item or two? Mashed potatoes and stuffing are staples of any Thanksgiving dinner but sweet potatoes and broccoli casserole are items that make a regular appearance as well.

Sometimes you may want to try something new though. Perhaps a new recipe will become a new family tradition at the dinner table. If you are looking for something new for dessert as opposed to a pumpkin or apple pie, then how about a Pumpkin cheesecake instead? If that sounds appetizing to you then follow this link for the recipe.

My mouth is watering already in anticipation of Thanksgiving at my parents’ house. What will you be offering for the traditional turkey day?

Go to the Movies!

Published by kevinmcguire under Entertainment Edit This

night-at-the-movies.jpgToday is Friday and typically it is a big movie night. So why not take it easy tonight and go out and catch a movie. If you have yet to see it I would recommend the latest James Bond film, Quantam of Solace. Personally I am also interested in the new Disney computer animated movie, Bolt . If you are lucky enough you can even see the movie in 3-D!

For the teenage girls there is Twilight , based on the book. Twilight is an action packed, modern-day love story between a teenage girl and a vampire. Honestly I don’t get it but it seems to be fairly popular for the teenage girl portion of the country.

To each their own is what I say. What movie will you take in this weekend? what are your movie suggestions for other readers? What do you think of the new releases?

Put Together Your Holiday Wish List

Published by kevinmcguire under Holidays Edit This

Thanksgiving, in my family at least, is the traditional time to exchange Christmas lists with everyone. For years I have typed up and printed out a copy for my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. With Thanksgiving a week away the time to get this wish list on paper is now!

This Sunday is typically the best Sunday paper as far as ads go so be sure to pick up a paper on Sunday. The Thursday paper on Thanksgiving is also typically a terrific day for ads.

What is tops on your wish list this holiday season? Leave your wish lists in the comments section below!

Hi everybody!

Published by kevinmcguire under Blog Updates Edit This

Dr. Nick“Hi Dr. Nick!”

Let me take a moment to welcome you to my new blog, hosted by Today.com . This will be a work in progress and I hope that it goes as smoothly as I plan. Let me tell you why this blog will be different from any of my previous blogs. First of all, you can visit my personal blog, Ramblings 1.5 , and still expect to see new material there as I get to it. As you can tell by the names of the blogs hopefully, you will get two different types of content at each site, making them both worth checking out.

Let’s talk about the new blog. The title of this blog is What Should You Do Today? The premise is simple. Every day brings us all a chance to learn something new, try something we haven’t tried before, or do something we haven’t done in years. What I will present to you is one thing that you should do each day. I will try to update the blog every week day as early as possible, but as of now I do not guarantee an update every single day.

If you have a suggestion for something to do feel free to drop me a line or leave a comment below. Feedback is always welcome. This blog will be a work in progress for a bit as I attempt to get the right feel and layout to ensure smooth reading for you the reader!
